While it’s unlikely that drinking one or two cups of tea a day will cause you any illness, if you eat unhealthy foods daily and are not very active, drinking tea rich in milk and sugar for a long time and multiple times a day can contribute to health problems like gas, acidity, stomach upset, obesity, diabetes, and even fatty liver.

New Delhi: Most people in India start their day with tea in the morning. It's not just a drink, but a ritual that gives them the energy to start their day. Tea is also consumed to energize the body for long work hours, refresh, and reduce stress.
But tea, rich in milk and sugar, can harbor even more harmful substances than caffeine. Over time, this daily addiction can silently and seriously impact your digestion and liver health.
Will drinking tea make you sick?
While it's unlikely that drinking one or two cups of tea a day will cause you any illness, if you eat unhealthy foods daily and are not very active, drinking tea rich in milk and sugar for a long time and multiple times a day can contribute to health problems like gas, acidity, stomach upset, obesity, diabetes, and even fatty liver.
What Experts Say
Dr. Deepak Bhangale, a gastroenterologist, hepatologist, and interventional endoscopist at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Navi Mumbai, recently explained in an Instagram post how your regular milk tea habit could be causing more harm than you realize.
Dangers of Regular Tea
Dr. Deepak says, "People drink tea when they have a headache. They drink tea when they're having trouble digesting food. They even want tea when they're feeling lazy. In our culture, tea becomes a solution to whatever problem you face.
Tea contains tannins. These are natural compounds that can irritate your stomach. Drinking very strong tea or drinking it on an empty stomach can increase acidity and cause heartburn."
Avoid these things with tea.
He said, "Many of us also like to eat spicy snacks, biscuits, or fried foods with tea, but this is where the problem becomes even worse. Drinking tea with spicy or oily foods can further irritate the stomach lining and increase acid production, further burdening the digestive system."
What is the right way to drink tea?
So, should you completely stop drinking tea daily? Dr. Bhangale says, "Absolutely not. It all depends on balance and timing."
1- Always drink tea with a light and healthy breakfast to prevent acid buildup.
2- Drink mild tea instead of strong tea, as strong tea with strong leaves is more irritating to the stomach.
3- To speed up digestion and relieve acidity, drink herbal or ginger tea.
4- Avoid adding too much sugar to tea, as it can harm the good bacteria in the stomach.
He concludes, "You don't need to give up tea, you just need to make it healthier for your stomach. Your body will thank you for it in the long run."
