New Delhi: Pilates is emerging as a popular fitness choice among younger generations, especially Gen Z, as more people turn to low-impact workouts that combine strength, flexibility, and mindfulness. Originally developed in the early 20th century, the exercise system is now seeing renewed interest for its holistic health benefits.

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of strength training, but it doesn't look like some of the other strength training exercises you might be familiar with. Pilates focuses more on improving muscle tone than building muscles, but the result is similar: greater stability and endurance.

Pilates isn't going to bulk you up if anything, it's designed to cultivate a longer, leaner look. Still, it can lay a strong physical foundation for muscle-building activities and you may even reduce your likelihood of injury.

Pilates suitable for everyone?

Pilates caters for everyone, from beginner to advanced. You can perform exercises using your own body weight, or with the help of various pieces of equipment. A typical Pilates workout includes a number of exercises and stretches.

Each exercise is performed with attention to correct breathing techniques and abdominal muscle control. To gain the maximum benefit, you should do Pilates at least two or three times per week. You may notice postural improvements after 10 to 20 sessions.

How often should you do Pilates as a beginner?

Once a week could be a great way to start, by attending a beginner class or private session, Skinner recommends. As you gain familiarity with the practice you may start with doing the workout session once a week could and then you might like to add a second or third class to your weekly schedule.

After getting familiar, one may design simple Pilates movements to try outside of the class environment (such as including a few moves into your regular gym routine, or creating an at-home sequence.
