New Delhi: Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, and Egypt have emerged as key diplomatic players, collectively warning the United States against launching any military action on Iran. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Oman exerted significant diplomatic pressure on the US to refrain from an attack. Following these warnings, former US President Donald Trump reportedly put any military action on hold, stating that killings in Iran were declining.
A Gulf official, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue, said the four countries engaged in intense backchannel diplomacy with both Washington and Tehran this week.
Their efforts were aimed at preventing a potential US strike linked to Iran’s use of force against protesters, amid fears that such an escalation could destabilize the entire region.
Warning of Serious Regional Consequences
The official said the Arab nations made it clear to Washington that any military action against Iran would have far-reaching consequences—both in terms of regional security and economic stability-that would eventually affect the United States itself.
At the same time, the countries reportedly conveyed a strong message to Iran, warning that any retaliatory strikes on US military bases in the Gulf would severely damage Tehran’s relations with its regional neighbors.
Gulf States on High Alert
Gulf nations are particularly concerned that Iranian retaliation could target US military installations hosted on their soil, as well as critical energy infrastructure that forms the backbone of the regional economy.
Saudi Arabia and Qatar, both of which maintain close ties with the Trump administration, played a central role in communicating these concerns.
Qatar and Egypt have also been key mediators in recent regional conflicts, including efforts to broker dialogue between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
The United Arab Emirates’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding its role in the diplomatic efforts. Similarly, officials from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, and Egypt were unavailable for immediate comment.
