New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has once again praised India’s photo-based voter identification system and expressed his intention to introduce a similar mechanism in the United States.

Trump said making voter ID reforms a key issue would be part of his campaign strategy ahead of the upcoming US midterm elections in November, where several seats in the US Congress will be contested.

Addressing a rally in South Carolina, Trump said his administration would work towards passing the “Save America Act” to strengthen election security. He called for mandatory photo identification for every voter, saying it would also help verify US citizenship.

“There must be legislation requiring photo identification for every voter. This would also serve as proof of their US citizenship,” Trump said.

Trump calls voter ID a security measure

Trump argued that a nationwide voter ID system would create a permanent framework for verifying voters’ identities. He expressed confidence that such legislation would withstand legal challenges in the US Supreme Court.

He also accused the Democratic Party of opposing voter identification measures, claiming that verifying voter identity would improve election security and protect the integrity of the electoral process.

Earlier, Trump had praised India’s voter ID-based election system and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, saying the US should consider adopting a similar model.

Trump announces Xi Jinping visit

Meanwhile, discussing US foreign policy, Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit the United States in the coming weeks. He said talks between the two leaders would be held at the White House’s new Military Ballroom.

On tensions involving Iran, Trump described the Strait of Hormuz as a strategically important maritime route and reiterated that Iran would not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons.
