LPG Cargo Ships Safely Cross Hormuz Route
New Delhi: At a time when tensions in West Asia have triggered concerns over global fuel supply and rising petrol, diesel, and CNG prices, India has received a significant boost in its energy supplies. Two LPG carrier vessels transporting a combined 66,392 metric tonnes of cooking gas have safely crossed the strategically important Strait of Hormuz and are now heading towards Indian ports.
The successful passage of the ships comes as maritime movement in the Gulf region remains under pressure due to continuing geopolitical tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.
One of the vessels, the Marshall Islands-flagged LPG tanker “Symi,” crossed the Strait of Hormuz on May 13. The ship departed from Qatar’s Ras Laffan terminal carrying 19,965 metric tonnes of LPG cargo meant for India. Officials said the vessel has 21 foreign crew members onboard and is expected to arrive at Deendayal Port in Kandla, Gujarat, on Saturday.
The second vessel, NV Sunshine, safely crossed the Strait at around 9:30 am on Thursday. The tanker is expected to reach the New Mangaluru Port by May 18.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways confirmed the development during an inter-ministerial press briefing in New Delhi. Mukesh Mangal, Additional Secretary in the ministry, stated that both LPG carriers had crossed the Strait safely in coordination with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC).
Officials highlighted that the successful transit is crucial for India’s energy security, especially at a time when global shipping routes in the Gulf are witnessing disruptions.
According to officials, 13 India-linked vessels, including 12 LPG tankers and one crude oil tanker, have crossed the Strait of Hormuz since early March despite regional tensions. However, several ships are still stranded in Gulf waters due to security concerns and disruptions in maritime traffic.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical oil and gas shipping routes, making every successful transit vital for global and Indian energy supplies.
