Iran reacts to Donald Trump’s UNGA warning as tensions between Washington and Tehran intensify over security and diplomatic issues. (Images: Google)
New York: Iran has strongly reacted to US President Donald Trump’s warning that Washington could “annihilate” the Islamic Republic, describing the statement as a sign of what it called strategic desperation rather than strength. The response came after Trump’s address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where he warned Tehran about a possible choice between reaching an agreement and facing further US action.
Iran’s Armed Forces issued a statement through the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces and the Khatam al-Anbya Central Headquarters, according to Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency.
Iranian military authorities said Trump’s remarks were aimed more at domestic political messaging than reflecting the actual situation between the two countries. The statement claimed that repeated warnings against Iran showed difficulties faced by Washington rather than demonstrating American power. Iran also accused the US of contributing to instability in West Asia through its military presence in the region.
The Iranian military statement said Tehran had acted as a force supporting regional security and international trade. It accused Washington of attempting to counter what Iran described as setbacks in its confrontation with the US and its allies.
Iranian authorities further claimed that Trump’s statements would not change the balance of power or affect Tehran’s position.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in New York for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly amid growing tensions with Western countries. Before travelling to the US, Pezeshkian said Iran would present its position on international platforms, including issues related to negotiations and agreements with Western powers. He alleged that previous commitments made during negotiations had not been honoured, while calling for Iran’s concerns to be addressed at global forums.
During his UNGA address, Trump said Iran faced a choice between reaching a deal and facing further US action. Trump said a possible agreement could allow Iran to rebuild and pursue economic growth, but he also warned of severe consequences if diplomacy failed.
The remarks came as tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high, with both sides exchanging strong statements amid uncertainty over future diplomatic efforts.
