Washington: US President Donald Trump on Sunday declared that the United States Navy would begin the process of blockading vessels entering or exiting the Strait of Hormuz. The move follows the collapse of high-stakes negotiations between Washington and Tehran held in Islamabad.
Trump stated that while discussions saw agreement on several issues, the core concern Iran’s nuclear programme remained unresolved, leading to a breakdown in diplomacy.

In a strongly worded statement, Trump accused Iran of engaging in “world extortion” by restricting access to the crucial maritime route. He warned that any vessel paying what he described as an “illegal toll” to Iran would not be guaranteed safe passage.

The US Navy has also been instructed to monitor and potentially interdict ships suspected of complying with Iranian demands in international waters, signalling a significant escalation in maritime enforcement.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical transit routes, historically responsible for nearly 20% of global oil shipments. Any disruption in this corridor has immediate implications for global energy markets and supply chains.
Iran has effectively restricted movement through the strait for weeks, following joint US and Israeli military operations targeting its infrastructure.
Recent developments highlight the volatility in the region. Several commercial vessels have attempted to pass through the strait but were forced to turn back due to security concerns. On Sunday, two crude tankers reportedly aborted their transit at the last moment amid escalating tensions.
Meanwhile, US warships have begun mine-clearing operations in the area, indicating preparations for sustained naval engagement.
Trump emphasized that the United States remains prepared to take further action, stating that Iran could be “finished” at an appropriate time if tensions continue to rise. However, he also hinted at the possibility of restoring open navigation if conditions improve.
With diplomacy stalled and military posturing intensifying, the situation in the region remains fragile, with global economic and geopolitical consequences hanging in the balance.
