Islamabad: High-stakes talks between the United States and Iran in Islamabad ended without an agreement after nearly 21 hours of continuous negotiations. The discussions, aimed at easing tensions in West Asia, concluded early Sunday with both sides acknowledging a failure to reach common ground.

The American delegation was led by US Vice President JD Vance, while Iran’s team was headed by senior officials including parliamentary leadership and foreign ministry representatives.

Tehran Blames Washington’s ‘Excessive Demands’

Following the talks, Iranian state media, including Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, criticised Washington, stating that “unreasonable” and “unlawful” demands had stalled progress.

According to the statement, Iranian negotiators engaged “continuously and intensively” to safeguard national interests but found US expectations unacceptable. Tehran urged Washington to avoid what it described as excessive conditions that hinder diplomacy.

Iran Reaffirms Commitment to National Interests

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said the country remains firm in protecting its sovereignty and interests. He also pointed to past experiences, accusing the US of failing to honour commitments.

Baqaei emphasised that Iran would utilise all available tools, including diplomacy, to secure its national priorities, signalling that while talks have failed for now, engagement may continue under different terms.

US Says Iran Refused Key Terms

Addressing reporters, JD Vance confirmed that despite “substantive discussions,” no agreement was reached. He stated that Iran ultimately chose not to accept US conditions, though he did not disclose specific sticking points.

Vance indicated that nuclear concerns were central to the negotiations, with Washington seeking assurances that Iran would not develop nuclear weapons capabilities. He added that the US had shown flexibility but remained firm on its core red lines.

Broader Context and Key Demands

The Islamabad meeting followed a recently announced two-week ceasefire aimed at reducing hostilities in the region. Prior to the talks, Iran had proposed a 10-point framework, including the withdrawal of US forces from West Asia, easing of sanctions, unfreezing of assets, and a ceasefire involving Israel in Lebanon.

Despite these proposals, the gap between both sides remained significant, underscoring the complexity of ongoing geopolitical tensions.
