The earthquake was so intense that its tremors were clearly felt in the surrounding areas as well. Officials have immediately instructed the residents of the affected areas to reach safe places, reports Dynamite News.
After the earthquake, the Chilean government has issued a tsunami warning in coastal areas. Chilean President Gabriel Boric posted a message on the social media platform X (Twitter) and appealed to the people to immediately evacuate the coastal areas. He said that the government, through the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (SENAPRED), has ordered the residents of coastal cities in the Magallanes region to reach safe places.
According to USGS data, the epicenter of the earthquake was located under the sea, 219 kilometers south of the Argentine city of Ushuaia. However, its intensity was so high that people in cities like Punta Arenas in Chile and Rio Gallegos in Argentina also felt strong tremors. As soon as the earthquake struck, people came out of their homes and started running towards open fields. There is no news of any major damage or casualties yet, but officials are keeping an eye on the situation.
The affected area Magallanes is the southernmost and largest province of Chile, but its population is very low. According to government data, the population here in 2017 was only 1 lakh 66 thousand. Chilean President Boric assured that all the resources of the country have been deployed to help the earthquake victims.
Why is this area sensitive?
Argentina and Chile are located in a geological region called the "Ring of Fire", where earthquakes and volcanic activities are often seen. This region is a collision zone of tectonic plates, so there is always a risk of earthquakes here.
