Kathmandu: Political instability is at its peak in Nepal these days. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's government has fallen after massive protests by Gen-Z. After this, there is a political uproar in Nepal regarding the selection of the interim prime minister.

However, now there has been a big turn in the events, and former Chief Justice of Nepal Sushila Karki is once again seen leading the race for the Prime Minister.

Fall of the Oli government and search for interim PM

The Jan-Z movement brought a big change in the politics of Nepal. Due to heavy opposition and public pressure from the youth, KP Sharma Oli had to resign. After his resignation, discussions intensified about appointing an interim prime minister in Nepal, but the crisis increased due to a lack of clarity on this constitutionally.

A secret meeting at midnight changed the game

Late Thursday night, an important and secret meeting was held at Shital Niwas (Rashtrapati Bhavan) in which many big faces were present—Nepali Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, National Assembly Speaker Narayan Dahal, and current Supreme Court Chief Justice Prakash Singh Raut.

In this meeting, after taking opinions from constitutional experts, it was agreed that Sushila Karki should be made the interim prime minister.

Why did Sushila Karki come forward?

Sushila Karki also has the support of the Jan-Z movement. If sources are to be believed, Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah (Balen) is also supporting her. Balen himself refused to become the interim PM so that he can claim the post of prime minister through general elections in the future.

Earlier it was reported that Sushila Karki had withdrawn her name from the race for PM, but then the Army Chief persuaded her for 15 hours, after which she agreed.

How will a constitutional way be found?

There is no provision in the Constitution of Nepal to directly appoint an interim prime minister. In such a situation, according to sources, President Ramchandra Poudel can issue an ordinance through which Sushila Karki will first be nominated to the Upper House (National Assembly), and then she will be declared the interim PM.

The president has also made it clear that he wants to resolve the political crisis by staying within the constitutional limits.

Responsibility of elections on interim government

It is also believed that the interim government will be given the responsibility of conducting general elections in the country in the next 6 months. This means that the leader elected as interim PM will play an important role in taking Nepal towards stability.

The current political crisis in Nepal is now at a decisive turn. Between the role of Jan-Z, support of the army, and constitutional balance, the name of Sushila Karki has emerged as the strongest contender. If everything goes according to plan, her name can be officially announced on Friday, and Nepal will get an interim government.
