Davos: US President Donald Trump delivered a wide-ranging and provocative speech at the World Economic Forum 2026 in Davos, emphasising what he described as significant economic gains in the United States and asserting the nation’s central role in global prosperity.

Trump reiterated his long-standing message that the US economy acts as an “engine” for the world with global growth tied closely to American performance.

Europe ‘Not Heading in the Right Direction’

In remarks that underscored rising tensions with Western allies, Trump criticised several European policies including government spending, migration rules, and trade approaches. He urged Europe to adopt economic strategies similar to those of the United States, claiming that the continent was “not heading in the right direction.”

Greenland: Strategic Priority and Flashpoint

One of Trump’s most controversial topics was Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory. Trump described Greenland as occupying a key strategic location between the United States, Russia and China, and argued that it is “largely undefended.” He asserted that no country other than the United States is capable of effectively securing it and called on allies to consider US involvement.

Though he did not advocate military force, Trump reiterated his desire for negotiations regarding Greenland’s status, calling it a “core national security interest” for the United States. His comments have already drawn concern from European leaders and strained transatlantic relations.

Venezuela and Other Global Issues

Trump also touched upon Venezuela, claiming that sustained pressure from the United States had pushed the South American nation toward a significant economic turnaround. He argued that recent changes in Venezuela position it to earn more in coming months than it has in decades.

Claims on India-Pakistan Peace Efforts

In another bold assertion, Trump repeated his claim that he had helped prevent a potential conflict between India and Pakistan, a claim he has made in previous forums as well. While this assertion reflects his broader foreign policy narrative, it has not been independently confirmed by other governments or international bodies.

Trump’s Davos speech underscored a more confrontational US foreign policy tone, touching on economic leadership, strategic geopolitics and alliance relations. His remarks especially on Greenland are likely to influence diplomatic discussions in the weeks ahead as world leaders process the implications of his proposals.
