Islamabad: Pakistan has drawn widespread attention online after an official statement from its foreign office misspelled the name of the United States, triggering a wave of criticism and mockery on social media platforms.

The statement, issued ahead of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Washington, referred to the country as the “Unites States of Americas.” The twin errors “Unites” instead of “United” and “Americas” instead of “America” quickly went viral, overshadowing the diplomatic purpose of the trip.

Social Media Reacts Swiftly

Users across platforms were quick to highlight the mistake, with screenshots of the statement circulating widely. Several commentators expressed disbelief that such an error could appear in an official diplomatic communication. Some posts mocked the proofreading standards, while others pointed to a pattern of past gaffes.

The online reaction added to the embarrassment, as critics questioned how such mistakes continue to slip through official channels.

Not the First Controversy

This is not the first time Pakistan has faced online ridicule over language errors. In a previous incident, a purported statement containing a spelling error in the word “condemn” also went viral, drawing sharp reactions and widespread discussion.

Such episodes have repeatedly sparked debates about the importance of careful drafting and review in high-level diplomatic communications.

Visit to Washington

The controversy comes as Sharif arrived in Washington to attend the inaugural session of the Board of Peace, following an invitation reportedly extended by Donald Trump. He is accompanied by senior members of his cabinet, including key ministers overseeing foreign affairs, finance, and information.

While the visit aims to strengthen diplomatic engagement, the focus has temporarily shifted to the viral typo. The incident underscores how, in the digital age, even minor mistakes in official statements can rapidly escalate into global talking points.
