Islamabad: Pakistan has claimed to have carried out airstrikes in areas along the Afghan border early Sunday. Islamabad stated that this was an intelligence-based and selective military operation that targeted seven locations belonging to the banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and its affiliated groups. The Pakistani government claims these locations were plotting to carry out terrorist activities in the country from across the border.

Statement by Information Minister

Pakistan's Information Minister, Attaullah Tarar, stated on social media that precise strikes were also carried out on the hideouts of an Islamic State-affiliated group in the border region. However, he did not specify which specific area in Afghanistan the strikes were carried out. There was no immediate official response from Kabul.

Reports of Attacks in Paktika and Nangarhar

According to local media reports, a religious seminary in the Barmal district of Paktika province, Afghanistan, was also targeted. Pakistan Air Force fighter jets reportedly bombed several locations in Barmal, as well as in the Khogyani district of Nangarhar province. Reports indicate multiple airstrikes in Barmal and Arghun districts of Paktika and Khogyani, Bahsud, and Ghani Khel districts of Nangarhar. However, these claims have not yet been independently confirmed.

Toughening Stance After Recent Attacks

This action comes at a time when Pakistan has seen a recent surge in terrorist incidents. A suicide bomber targeted a security checkpoint in Bajaur district, killing 11 soldiers and a child. Another suicide attack in Bannu district also killed two soldiers. The Pakistani military had previously warned that it would take action against those responsible, regardless of location.

Allegations of Conspiracy from Afghan Soil

Islamabad alleges that the TTP operates from Afghan territory and that recent attacks, including the suicide bombing of a Shia mosque in the capital, were carried out under the direction of leadership based in Afghanistan. However, both Kabul and the TTP have denied these allegations.

Rising Border Tensions

Relations between the two countries have been strained since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in 2021. Border clashes have previously claimed numerous lives. A ceasefire brokered by Qatar has held, but a lasting solution has yet to be found. Recent developments have once again raised regional security concerns.
