New Delhi: Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina has issued a strong appeal to the people of Bangladesh, urging them to reclaim democracy and national sovereignty. Speaking through an audio message from India, where she has remained since being forced out of office amid widespread violence, Hasina described the current situation in Bangladesh as one of fear, chaos, and brutality.

She referred to the country as a “wounded and blood-soaked land,” calling the present phase the gravest crisis Bangladesh has faced since the Liberation War led by her father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Interim Government Branded ‘Fascist and Corrupt’

Hasina sharply criticised the interim administration, labelling it “fascist, corrupt, and illegitimate.” She claimed that democracy in Bangladesh is effectively “in exile,” alleging that press freedom has been curtailed and basic human rights violated.

According to Hasina, the breakdown of law and order has left religious minorities, women, and children increasingly vulnerable. She accused the current regime of presiding over a climate of terror that has spread across both urban and rural areas.

Allegations of Widespread Violence and Instability

In her message, Hasina alleged that killings, arson, looting, and forced extortion have become widespread. She said the unrest has severely disrupted educational institutions and paralysed normal life, further weakening the country’s economy.

She also claimed that foreign interests are taking advantage of the instability to gain control over Bangladesh’s land and resources, warning that national sovereignty is at risk.

Call for Unity and Democratic Revival

Appealing to the public, Hasina urged citizens to rise with the spirit of the Liberation War and defend the constitution. “Our homeland’s soul has been tarnished,” she said, calling on people to restore democratic governance and national dignity.

She reaffirmed the Awami League’s historical role as a defender of pluralism, democratic values, and Bangladesh’s secular identity. Hasina appealed to democratic, progressive, and non-sectarian forces to unite, describing the current situation as a decisive national moment.

Five-Point Roadmap for Restoration

Hasina outlined five key steps to restore peace and democracy: removal of the current administration, an immediate end to street violence, protection for minorities and vulnerable groups, an end to intimidation of journalists and opposition leaders, and the invitation of the United Nations to conduct an impartial investigation into events over the past year.

She concluded by stressing that unity, courage, and a clear plan are essential to rebuilding Bangladesh’s democratic future.
