Sri Lanka opposition vows to topple NPP govt soon
Colombo: Amidst ongoing tensions between the government and the opposition in Sri Lanka, the opposition party led by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has accused the National People's Power (NPP) government of failing to fulfill its election promises. It has also warned that if the government fails to fulfill its promises, it will topple the government at the first opportunity.
Speaking at a rally in Nugegoda, a suburb of the capital Colombo, on Friday, Mahinda Rajapaksa's son and political heir, Namal Rajapaksa, said, "We are ready and warn the government that we will topple it at the first opportunity."
Namal further stated that the Sri Lankan government must fulfill its promises to the people. He also emphasized that despite several party leaders being in jail or on bail on corruption charges, he will not be intimidated and will continue the struggle.
A massive rally against the NPP government
It should be noted that a large number of people attended the rally against the Sri Lankan government, although the main opposition party, the SJB, did not participate. SJB leader Sajith Premadasa stated that his party and the Rajapaksa family have ideological differences and did not participate jointly due to the ongoing corruption investigation.
What did rally organizer Udama say?
On the other hand, rally organizer Udama Gammanpila said that the demonstration demonstrates that people are united despite differences within political parties. Harin Fernando, a representative of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe's UNP, said that the rally was a great success despite government obstacles.
He claimed that the government turned off loudspeakers and cut off electricity to prevent people from attending, but despite this, a large number of people attended.
