New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has approved a proposal to grant international status to Madurai Airport, in Tamil Nadu.
The airport serves as a key entry point for travellers visiting southern parts of the State.
With this decision, Madurai becomes the fourth international airport in Tamil Nadu, after Chennai, Coimbatore and Tiruchirapalli.
According to the government, upgrading the airport will enhance international air connectivity for the region.
The move is expected to strengthen tourism and pilgrimage travel, as Madurai is an important religious and cultural destination.
Officials believe the new status could attract more international pilgrims and business travellers, thereby boosting trade and economic activity in the region.
