Dhaka: The interim government in Bangladesh has suffered a major setback amidst the ongoing political crisis. Khodabakhsh Chowdhury, a special assistant to the Home Ministry, has resigned from his post, which has been accepted by President Mohammed Shahabuddin. Khodabakhsh Chowdhury is a former Inspector General of Police (IGP) and was appointed as a special assistant to Muhammad Yunus on November 10, 2024.

Atmosphere of rebellion and violence

The situation in the country worsened when violence escalated after the death of rebel leader Osman Hadi. One person was killed in a bomb attack near a church in the capital Dhaka on December 24. Crowds set fire to the offices of prominent newspapers, the Daily Star and Prothom Alo. This has raised serious concerns about civil security and law and order.

Tarique Rahman's return to Bangladesh

Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's son, Tarique Rahman, has returned to his country after 17 years. He fled to London in 2008 while facing corruption charges. 100,000 workers of his party, the BNP, gathered at the airport to give him a grand welcome. Tarique Rahman's return has stirred up the party and the opposition political landscape.

Elections and political future

General elections are scheduled in Bangladesh on February 12, 2026. These elections will be the first national elections since the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government in July 2024. Khodabakhsh Chowdhury's resignation is considered the fourth major resignation in Yunus's interim government. Political experts believe that Tarique Rahman could be a contender for the next Prime Minister amidst the BNP's increasing chances in the elections.

Awami League Ban

The Yunus government has banned Sheikh Hasina's Awami League party. This has increased the chances of the BNP winning the elections. BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia is 80 years old, and her health is reportedly poor. In this situation, her son, Tarique Rahman, could play a major role in leading the party and formulating election strategy.

Political Instability in the Country

Political instability is increasing in Bangladesh amidst protests, violence, and resignations. Security arrangements are being strengthened under the supervision of the president and the interim government. The activism of opposition parties and the return of leader Tarique Rahman have created new dynamics in the country's politics. Political unrest and the security situation remain the biggest issues ahead of the upcoming elections.
