US-Iran Talks Heat Up as Iran’s Expected Reply Draws Global Attention
Tehran: Iran is expected to send its formal response on Thursday to a United States-backed proposal aimed at reducing tensions across the Middle East. According to a regional source cited in international reports, the reply will be delivered through mediators as diplomatic engagement continues between Washington and Tehran.
The proposal is designed to create a pathway toward de-escalation of the ongoing regional crisis.
Reports indicate that discussions between the two sides have made steady progress in recent weeks. While no final agreement has been reached, officials suggest both Washington and Tehran are moving closer to a preliminary understanding that could lead to broader negotiations.
An Axios report, quoting US officials and sources familiar with the talks, described the development as the most significant breakthrough since the crisis began. However, it stressed that several issues remain unresolved.
At the centre of negotiations is a proposed one-page memorandum containing around 14 points. The draft reportedly outlines an immediate ceasefire followed by a 30-day period of detailed talks for a long-term settlement.
Under the proposed arrangement, Iran would temporarily halt uranium enrichment activities. In return, the United States would begin easing sanctions and release frozen Iranian assets worth billions of dollars. Both sides would also work toward reducing regional tensions, including easing restrictions linked to the Strait of Hormuz.
Officials quoted in the report have cautioned that many aspects of the proposal still depend on further negotiations. This means the situation remains fluid, with outcomes ranging from potential peace progress to renewed tensions.
Some reports also suggest that recent US decisions to scale down military activity in key maritime areas may have been influenced by ongoing diplomatic efforts.
The talks are reportedly being led by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who are in contact with Iranian representatives through direct channels and third-party mediators.
If finalised, the agreement would mark a formal step toward ending the current conflict and shifting detailed technical discussions to neutral venues such as Geneva or Islamabad.
