Relentless rains wreak havoc across North India, several states flooded

Heavy monsoon rains trigger floods across North India, causing over 340 deaths, widespread destruction, school closures, and severe disruption to transport and agriculture in multiple states.

New Delhi: Recently, torrential rains in many states of North India have completely disrupted life. Heavy rains have created flood-like situations in states like Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Jammu, and Kashmir. This has not only caused loss of life and property, but roads, schools, colleges, and businesses have also been badly affected.

Himachal Pradesh has been in the grip of natural disaster since the beginning of the monsoon this time. According to the State Emergency Operations Center, so far 343 people have died in rain-related incidents and road accidents in the state, and 43 people are still missing.

1,292 roads are closed across the state, in which the Mandi, Kullu, Shimla, Chamba, and Sirmaur districts have major participation. The Meteorological Department has issued a Yellow Alert for Friday and Saturday, predicting rain with thunder and lightning.

It is raining continuously in many areas of the national capital, Delhi. The Meteorological Department has issued Yellow and Orange Alerts and advised people to remain alert.

Light to moderate rain is forecast in East, South, Central, North, and West Delhi. On Thursday, 2 mm was recorded in Safdarjung, 2.4 mm in Lodhi Road, and 5 mm in the Ridge area. The weather is likely to remain the same in the coming days.

Worst flood in decades in Punjab

The state of Punjab is currently grappling with the biggest flood in decades. The water level of the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers has increased due to heavy rains in the catchment areas of Himachal and Jammu and Kashmir.

So far 37 people have lost their lives, and more than 3.55 lakh people have been affected. Also, crops on 1.75 lakh hectares of agricultural land have been destroyed. The state government has extended the holidays of schools, colleges, and universities till September 7.

Heavy rain warning in other states too

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the monsoon trough is south of the normal position, due to which heavy rains have been predicted in other parts of the country as well.

Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, and Chandigarh may receive thunderstorms till September 10. Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Andaman-Nicobar are also on a heavy rain alert till September 10. In western India, Gujarat, Saurashtra, Goa, and Maharashtra are also likely to receive heavy rains till September 8.

The impact of the monsoon is at its peak in North India at this time. Floods, landslides, and heavy rains have directly affected the lives of people. Schools and colleges are closed, roads are blocked, and agriculture has also been affected heavily.
