Justice Surya Kant to Take Oath as 53rd CJI on 24 November
New Delhi: Justice Surya Kant, a senior judge of the Supreme Court of India, has been appointed as the country's next Chief Justice (CJI). He will take oath on 24 November, and assume office as the 53rd Chief Justice of India. He will assume office after the term of the current Chief Justice, Justice BR Gavai, ends on 23 November.
Union Minister of State for Law and Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Arjun Ram Meghwal, shared the information on social media, stating, "President Draupadi Murmu, exercising the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, has appointed Justice Surya Kant as the Chief Justice of the country." He further wrote, 'I extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to him.'

Earlier, the current CJI, BR Gavai recommended Justice Surya Kant's name as his successor to the Central Government. The Central Government then forwarded the name to the President, where it was approved.
Justice Surya Kant will serve as the Chief Justice of India from November 24, 2025, to February 9, 2027. During his tenure, several significant reforms and technological advancements are expected in the Supreme Court and the judiciary.
Justice Surya Kant was born on February 10, 1962, in Hisar district, Haryana. He received his early education in Hisar. He then earned his bachelor's degree from the Government Postgraduate College, Hisar.
In 1984, he completed his LLB (Law) from Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak. A brilliant student since childhood, Surya Kant made law his career path.
