New Delhi: Google has expanded its AI-powered virtual try on feature to India, allowing users to digitally try clothing items before purchasing. First announced at Google I/O in May and rolled out to select users in July, the feature is now accessible to a wider audience in the country. Indian shoppers can spot the new “try it on” icon on apparel product listings across Google platforms.

Tapping the icon launches the virtual try on tool, where users can upload an image of themselves to see how the clothing fits and looks. This allows shoppers to make more informed decisions and reduces the chances of returns.

Powered by Advanced AI for Realistic Experience

The virtual try on tool relies on a custom fashion-based image generation model that understands human anatomy and fabric behavior. Google explains that the AI can accurately simulate how different fabrics such as cotton, wool, or polyester stretch, drape, and fold on various body shapes.

Users can also scroll through previously tried outfits, save their favorite looks, and share them with friends or family through messaging or social media. The feature is designed to create a personalized, engaging, and interactive shopping experience for Indian consumers.

Integration Across Google Platforms

The tool is available across multiple Google services including AI Mode, Google Shopping, and product results on Google Images. Any apparel listed on Google’s Shopping Graph can now be virtually tried on. This integration ensures a seamless experience for users, no matter where they browse clothing items online.

By leveraging AI and large language models, Google aims to make online shopping more intuitive and reduce uncertainty when buying apparel, helping users visualize products before committing to a purchase.

Enhanced Shopping Experience

Beyond just trying on clothes virtually, Google’s tool allows users to save looks they like and revisit them later. Sharing capabilities make it easy for friends or family to weigh in on style choices. The feature is part of Google’s broader effort to enhance online shopping by blending AI with everyday consumer needs.

The company’s Group Product Manager, Logan Kilpatrick, also highlighted improvements to the Gemini app. The revamped app is expected to offer a cleaner, clutter-free design, further enhancing the overall digital shopping and AI experience.

Potential Impact on Indian E-Commerce

With India being one of the fastest-growing online shopping markets, Google’s virtual try on tool could significantly influence buying behavior. Consumers now have the chance to preview how clothing items will look and fit on their bodies, potentially reducing returns, increasing confidence in purchases, and providing a more engaging shopping experience.

The move aligns with Google’s vision to combine AI, personalization, and convenience to meet evolving consumer expectations. Shoppers in India can now experiment with a variety of outfits virtually, bridging the gap between online browsing and real-world try on.
