New Delhi: What you eat first thing in the morning can directly affect your digestion, energy levels and metabolism throughout the day. After remaining without food overnight, the stomach becomes more sensitive, making it important to choose the right foods and drinks to begin the day.
However as per experts there are some common foods that may not be suitable on an empty stomach and suggested healthier alternatives that are gentler on digestion.

Many people begin their mornings with oranges, pineapples or other citrus fruits believing they are a healthy option. However, experts say these fruits are highly acidic and may irritate the stomach lining when consumed on an empty stomach. For people prone to acidity or digestive discomfort, citrus fruits early in the day can sometimes worsen symptoms.
Green tea is often associated with weight loss and detox routines, but drinking it before eating may not suit everyone. According to the expert, the caffeine and tannins present in green tea can cause nausea, acidity and stomach irritation.
Similarly, tea and coffee consumed on an empty stomach may lead to bloating and digestive discomfort. Many people rely on caffeine to start the day, but experts advise pairing it with food instead of drinking it immediately after waking up.

Foods loaded with green or red chillies can irritate the stomach lining and trigger a burning sensation if eaten too early in the morning.
Fruit juices, though often considered healthy, may also not be the best choice. Since juices contain less fibre than whole fruits, they can cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels when consumed on an empty stomach.
Experts recommend starting the day with gentler options such as lukewarm jeera water, soaked almonds and walnuts, fresh fruits with mixed seeds or protein-rich foods like sprouts, curd and moong chilla.
Vegetable juices made from cucumber, bottle gourd, beetroot or coriander may also help hydrate the body while supporting digestion. Choosing balanced foods in the morning can help improve digestion, maintain energy levels and reduce unhealthy cravings later in the day.
