New Delhi: In today's urban India, PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), obesity, and hormonal imbalances have become rapidly growing problems among urban women. The biggest reason behind this is the rapidly changing lifestyle. There have been significant changes in the lifestyle and dietary habits in urban environments, which are contributing to these problems in women.
To learn about the lifestyle-related causes and preventive measures for these problems, we spoke to Dr. Manan Gupta (Chairman and HOD Obstetrics and Gynecology, Atlantis Health Care, New Delhi). Let's find out what the doctor says about this.
Modern Lifestyle
The daily routine in cities is often busy, stressful, and sedentary. Sitting at a desk for long periods, lack of physical activity, and irregular sleep cycles disrupt the body's natural circadian rhythm. This leads to insulin resistance, thyroid imbalance, and increased cortisol levels, which are directly linked to PCOS and weight gain.
Changes in Diet
Urban diets are full of processed foods, refined carbohydrates, sugary drinks, and unhealthy fats. Such a diet not only increases obesity but also causes inflammation and insulin resistance in the body. Additionally, nutrient deficiencies, especially of Vitamin D, iron, and omega-3, further affect hormonal balance.
Environment and Pollution
Air pollution in cities, endocrine-disrupting chemicals released from plastics (such as BPA), and the excessive use of pesticides on fruits and vegetables disrupt the body's hormonal balance. These "hormonal hackers" can disrupt the natural balance of estrogen and other hormones.
Stress
Career challenges, long commutes, family responsibilities, and social expectations constantly put mental pressure on urban women. Prolonged stress increases cortisol levels, which affects reproductive hormones, exacerbating PCOS symptoms and contributing to increased abdominal fat.
What to do for prevention?
Lifestyle changes are essential to address these challenges:
Healthy Diet - Include fiber-rich foods, protein, green vegetables, and whole grains in your diet. Avoid sugar and processed foods.
Regular Exercise - Exercise for 30-45 minutes, 5 days a week, including yoga, strength training, and cardio.
Stress Management - Practice meditation, pranayama, get enough sleep (7-8 hours), and make time for your hobbies.
