New Delhi: As soon as the rainy season arrives, cold winds start blowing and the craving for food also increases.
Be it hot pakoras with tea or the aroma of spicy food coming from the roadside – all this seems even more tempting in the rain. But keep in mind, due to humidity and dirt, food spoils quickly in this season and the risk of infection increases.
In such a situation, it is important to pay special attention to cleanliness and hygiene while choosing street food. Let us know which street foods are considered relatively safe in the rainy season, if you eat them from the right and trusted place.
Hot Pakoras
Pakoras and Bhajiyas are the most liked snacks in the rain. They are freshly fried in very hot oil, which reduces the risk of infection. Try to buy pakoras from such a cart where they are being taken out of the pan in front of you. Avoid pre-fried or cold pakoras.
Masala Corn
Boiled or roasted sweet corn is a comforting snack in this season. It is prepared at high temperature so it is considered safe to eat. Buy it from a hygienic vendor and enjoy it by adding lemon-masala to it, but avoid heavy mayo corn as it can spoil quickly in the rainy season.
Steamed Momos
Steamed momos are considered comparatively safe in the monsoon season as most of the bacteria are destroyed when cooked by steam. Just make sure that the momos are freshly made and the seller is clean. Avoid tandoori or fried momos that have been kept for too long or fried repeatedly.
Idli-Dosa
Fermented foods like idli and dosa are light and better options in this season. Their batter is gut-friendly and they are served hot. Just make sure that the sambhar and chutney are hot – cold or open chutneys can cause stomach upset.
Egg street food
Boiled eggs or freshly made egg bhurji are a great and safe option in the rainy season. Make sure the eggs are cooked thoroughly. Avoid vendors who use half-boiled eggs or old spices. Buy from places with clean utensils and covered items.
Tea-coffee
Masala chai or filter coffee is a different kind of pleasure in the rains. They are safe because they are hot. Just make sure that the milk is fresh and has not been heated throughout the day. Tea with ginger, cardamom and spices also helps in boosting immunity in monsoon.
