Mumbai: A minor dispute on a local train, considered Mumbai's lifeline, escalated into a horrific incident. Alok Kumar Singh (32), a professor at a college in Vile Parle, was stabbed to death at Malad railway station following a dispute over alighting. The Borivali Railway Police (GRP) acted swiftly and arrested the accused within 24 hours.

How did the incident occur?

According to police, the incident occurred on January 24, 2026, at around 5:40 p.m. Alok Kumar Singh boarded the Borivali slow local train from Andheri station. He was standing near the door of the compartment due to the crowd. As soon as the train stopped at platform number 1 of Malad railway station, he had an altercation with the accused over alighting.

The dispute escalated to the point where the accused stabbed Alok Kumar Singh on the left side of his abdomen with a sharp-edged weapon. The seriously injured professor was immediately rushed to the hospital, but died during treatment.

The deceased has been identified as Alok Kumar Singh. He was 32 years old and a resident of Malad East, Mumbai. Alok worked as a professor at a prestigious college in Vile Parle. According to family and colleagues, he was a calm person and dedicated to studies. His untimely death has caused grief not only to his family but also to the academic community.

Who is accused and how was he caught?

Police have identified the accused as Omkar Eknath Shinde (27), a resident of Kurar Village, Malad East. Based on technical evidence and a tip-off, police took him into custody on January 25, 2026. The accused is being interrogated, and the weapon used in the murder is also being investigated.
