Parliament clears bill to make Amaravati Andhra Pradesh's sole capital
New Delhi: In a significant development for Andhra Pradesh, the Rajya Sabha on Thursday passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, paving the way for Amaravati to be recognised as the state’s sole and permanent capital.
The Bill had already been approved by the Lok Sabha a day earlier. It will now be sent to President Droupadi Murmu for assent before it becomes law.
The legislation marks a major policy decision, settling the long-standing debate over the capital status of Andhra Pradesh following its bifurcation.
During the discussion in the Rajya Sabha, more than a dozen members participated, largely expressing support for the Bill. However, members of the opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) opposed the provisions, raising concerns over its implications and staging a walkout from the House.
Once it receives presidential assent, the law will formally establish Amaravati as the permanent administrative capital of the state.
