Bihar NDA Rift: JD(U) Accuses BJP Of Violating Coalition Dharma

Things are not rosy for the BJP-JD(U) alliance in Bihar, despite Nitin Nabin being at the helm. There were ruptures earlier between the two parties, but now JD(U) is annoyed over Independent MLCs, who defeated JD(U) candidates, being taken into the BJP.

Patna: Ever since Nitin Nabin became the BJP national president on January 20, 2026, he has been facing politically embarrassing situations in his own state of Bihar. His sudden elevation from MLA to BJP chief had surprised many in the party.

In August, Nabin lost his own vacated MLA seat-- Bankipur-- to Prashant Kishore of Jan Suraj Party. Later, it is said that Nitin Nabin was not effectively leading the party in Bihar on the issue of the SIR controversy and the "Vote theft" campaign of the Opposition.

Now, there is a controversy over Independent MLCs who won in Bihar last week, defeating the JD(U) candidates, were taken to the BJP, and the JD(U) questions the violation of coalition dharma. Political observers say that Nitin Nabin could have handled this situation in a better fashion.

JD(U) Questions BJP's Move To Welcome Independents

The JD(U) is annoyed by two independents, who defeated its candidates in the recently concluded Legislative Council elections, pledging their support to the BJP. The BJP has welcomed the two into its camp.

This is the first time since Samrat Choudhry took over as Chief Minister from Nitish Kumar in April that the JD(U) has expressed anger over what it calls "betrayal and distrust".

The JD(U) has asked the BJP to explain how Independent Rahul Raj, a rebel BJP candidate who defeated the JD(U) Anand Pushkar in the Saran Teachers' constituency, was taken back into the BJP fold after being expelled for six years for contesting against the official NDA nominee.

'Are Only We Supposed To Follow Coalition Dharma?'

Another Independent, Banshidhar Brajwasi, who defeated JD(U)'s Abhishek Jha in the Tirhut Graduate constituency, was also reportedly inducted into the BJP.

"Can the BJP explain why Rahul Raj was taken back into the party fold so soon ?" asked the Bihar JD(U) President Umesh Kushwaha. "Are only we supposed to follow coalition Dharma ?" said JD(U) candidate Anand Pushkar.

Senior JD(U) MLA Shyam Rajak said it was an " unethical and wrong precedent" for the BJP to induct an Independent into the party, pointing out that the anti-party decetion law prohibits elected Independents from joining the party.

Jan Suraj Seeks Disqualification Of Two MLCs

Prashant Kishore's Jan Suraj , which made its debut in the council polls, has petitioned Legislative Council Chairman Rambachan Roy, seeking the disqualification of Rahul Raj and Bansidhar Brajwasi.

The BJP has sought to contain the controversy, with state party president Sanjay Saraogi clarifying that the two Independents have not formally joined the party. "They have merely extended support to the BJP" he said.
