New Delhi: The Supreme Court Collegium has reportedly recommended the elevation of five legal professionals as judges of the Supreme Court. The recommendations include four sitting High Court judges and one senior advocate.

Mix Of High Court Judges And Senior Advocate

The proposed list features judges currently serving in different High Courts across the country. Senior Advocate V Mohana is the only lawyer recommended directly from the Bar for appointment to the apex court.

If approved by the Centre, the appointments will increase the working strength of the Supreme Court and help address the pendency of cases before the top court.

Appointment Process Explained

Under the existing collegium system, appointments to the Supreme Court are recommended by a panel headed by the Chief Justice of India along with the senior-most judges of the apex court. After the Collegium forwards its recommendations, the proposals are examined by the Union government before the President formally appoints the judges.

The development comes at a time when the judiciary is witnessing several vacancies in constitutional courts across the country.

Awaiting Official Notification

While reports regarding the recommendations have surfaced, an official statement from the Supreme Court Collegium is awaited. The appointments will become final only after the Centre clears the names and issues the formal notification.

The inclusion of judges from multiple High Courts is being seen as part of efforts to maintain regional representation and judicial balance within the Supreme Court.
