Amaravati officially declared Andhra Pradesh capital (Internet)
New Delhi: The Centre has officially notified the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Act, 2026, giving legal clarity on the designation of Amaravati as the state’s capital.
The legislation received the assent of the President on April 6 and has been published by the Ministry of Law and Justice for general information. The Act amends provisions of the earlier Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.
Amaravati Formally Named in Law
A key change introduced through the amendment is in Section 5 of the original law. The revised provision explicitly states that “Amaravati shall be the new capital” of Andhra Pradesh, replacing the earlier wording that referred more generally to the establishment of a new capital.

The amendment also expands the definition of Amaravati. It now includes the capital city areas notified under the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority Act, 2014, providing greater legal clarity regarding the extent of the capital region.
Retrospective Effect from 2024
Interestingly, the Act is deemed to have come into force retrospectively from June 2, 2024.

Implications for Governance and Development
The move is expected to have significant administrative and political implications, as the issue of the state capital has remained a subject of debate since the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014.
With this amendment, the Centre has formally reinforced Amaravati’s status, potentially bringing more certainty to governance, infrastructure planning, and investment in the region.
