Several low-lying areas, including T. Nagar, Velachery, and parts of North Chennai, reported knee-deep water, making it difficult for people to step out. The city’s airport also faced temporary disruptions, with water accumulating on the runways and taxiways, delaying several flights.

Regional Meteorological Centre Said

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai attributed the rainfall to a depression over the Bay of Bengal and warned of continued showers in the coming days.

City officials said pumping operations were underway and urged residents to stay indoors unless necessary. Emergency helplines have been activated, and the Greater Chennai Corporation is monitoring the situation closely.

Despite the rain, many households continued their Diwali celebrations indoors, lighting lamps and bursting crackers between the downpours.

Authorities have advised commuters to avoid waterlogged stretches and monitor updates from official sources for further developments.
