Rainfall and Thunderstorms Expected Across Tamil Nadu.
Chennai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday reported that a well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, off the Tamil Nadu coast, is expected to weaken within the next 24 hours.
According to an official post on X, the low-pressure area, which had moved northwestwards across north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh coasts, was positioned over north coastal Tamil Nadu and its surroundings as of 5:30 PM IST on October 22, 2025.
The weather department forecast that the system will continue moving west-northwest across north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh, gradually weakening into a low-pressure area over the course of the next day.

The IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning at isolated locations in several districts of Tamil Nadu. Areas such as Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, and Tirunelveli are expected to receive such weather until 10 AM on Thursday.
Residents have been cautioned about possible disruptions due to waterlogging, slippery roads, and traffic congestion in affected areas. The department advises motorists and pedestrians to exercise care during this period.
Chennai is likely to experience heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning on Thursday, according to the IMD’s daily weather update. Additionally, isolated places in Chengalpattu, Chennai, and Thiruvallur districts are expected to witness light rain.
The meteorological office has urged residents in these regions to remain vigilant and stay updated with further weather bulletins to stay safe amid the prevailing conditions.
State Preparing for Increased Rainfall.
Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, speaking earlier on Wednesday, confirmed that the Northeast monsoon was currently in full swing across Tamil Nadu. Continuous rainfall was reported in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu districts, with no signs of immediate respite.
Udhayanidhi held a review meeting at the DMK headquarters in Chennai’s Teynampet area to assess the ongoing weather situation. He said, “The northeast monsoon is in full swing now. It’s continuously raining in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu districts. It will not stop today, but the MeT Department has said it will rain again in two days and may even intensify.”
Citing the IMD’s forecast, Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin highlighted the likelihood of heavier rainfall this season compared to the previous year. He emphasized the importance of preparedness and directed officials to remain on alert for possible emergency situations.

The review meeting focused on planning precautionary measures and organizing relief efforts, with DMK party members tasked to assist in the field to manage any weather-related challenges.
