Delhi Metro breaks records with driverless trains
New Delhi: Delhi Metro has broken the previous record. Driverless trains will now operate on the Magenta Line between Janakpuri West and the Botanical Garden. This is known as Unattended Train Operations (UTO). For DMRC this represents a significant automation advance. All of the trains on this line are currently operating without a driver. There will be no drivers on the Pink Line which connects Majlis Park and Shiv Vihar.
The Delhi Metro began operating trains without drivers in 2020. Following approval from the Metro Rail Safety Commissioner the work was completed gradually. May 2024 saw the start of the first phase. The trains doors have been shut. While the train operator stayed in the cab the drivers seat was also gradually taken away. The train operator was permitted to live anywhere on the train by August 2024 thanks to the second phase.
In August the third stage got underway. In all other trains the train operator was present. According to the official May 2025 marked the final stage. This eliminated the train operator entirely. As a result trains on this line started operating entirely without drivers. In March 2025 the Pink Lines automation project got underway.
By June 2025 the official stated the Pink Line had finished the second phase. In the upcoming three to four months it is anticipated to begin operating entirely without a driver. One of the biggest driverless metro networks in the world will be Delhi Metro following the deployment of UTO.
Delhi-NCR network spans 395 km 97 km of which are completely automated. This is a significant advancement in urban transportation. Frequent prompt and secure services will be offered by this contemporary system. As a result less human intervention will occur.
