Toxic smog engulfs Delhi-NCR as AQI hits hazardous levels

New Delhi: A layer of fog and smog continues to blanket Delhi-NCR today, Friday, resulting in air quality being recorded in the 'very poor' category.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the average Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi was recorded at 350 at 7 am on Friday, which is considered to be in the 'very poor' category.

Worst situation in RK Puram

At 7 am today, the AQI was recorded at 348 in Anand Vihar, 324 in Alipur, 373 in Bawana, 326 in Burari, 352 in Chandni Chowk, 343 in Dwarka, 267 near Delhi Airport, 322 in ITO, 353 in Jahangirpuri, 363 in Rohini, 355 in Vivek Vihar, 374 in RK Puram, 330 in Narela, and 356 in Mundka. Earlier, the average 24-hour AQI for the capital was recorded at 342 on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, in Noida Sector-62, adjacent to Delhi, the AQI was recorded at 286 today, 300 in Vasundhara, Ghaziabad, 292 in Indirapuram, 305 in Gurugram Sector-51, 290 in Vikas Sadan, and 187 in Faridabad Sector-30. When is AQI considered good?

According to CPCB standards, an AQI between 0 and 50 is considered 'good', 51 to 100 'satisfactory', 101 to 200 'moderate', 201 to 300 'poor', 301 to 400 'very poor', and 401 to 500 'severe'.

Yellow Alert, Cold Wave Expected Today

The capital has been experiencing a continuous drop in temperature during the first week of December. On Thursday, the lowest maximum temperature of the season so far was recorded at 23.1 degrees Celsius, which is 2.2 degrees below normal. On Wednesday, the maximum temperature was 23.7 degrees Celsius.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), a further drop in temperature is expected on Friday, with a cold wave likely in some areas. A yellow alert has been issued for this. According to the IMD, the minimum temperature in the capital was 5.6 degrees Celsius, which is 3.9 degrees below normal. On Friday, it may drop further to 5.6 degrees Celsius. The main surface wind in the morning will be from the northwest direction and its speed may be up to 10 km per hour. Temperatures are expected to rise somewhat starting Saturday.
