EC announces final list of electoral college for Vice Presidential election

The Commission said in a statement that the list of electoral college for the Vice Presidential Election 2025 has been finalized.

New Delhi: The Election Commission on Thursday said it has prepared the final list of electoral college for the Vice Presidential election.

This election has become necessary due to the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar from the post of Vice President. The Vice President of India is elected by the Electoral College, which consists of elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and elected members of the Lok Sabha.

The Commission said in a statement that the list of electoral college for the Vice Presidential Election 2025 has been finalized.

Election date can be announced after a week

After this, a committee will be formed which will look into what problems were faced in the previous elections so that those problems are not faced this time. After this the election schedule will be announced. It will take about a week to complete this process. After this the date of election can be announced.

According to the rules, the election of the next Vice President should be held as soon as possible. The Election Commission said in its press note of July 23 that the Ministry of Home Affairs has duly informed about Dhankhar's resignation and the election schedule will be announced as soon as possible. The Election Commission said that the major preliminary steps initiated include compilation of the electoral college consisting of elected and nominated members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, selection of Returning Officer and Assistant Returning Officer, and preparation and distribution of detailed background material of all previous Vice Presidential elections.

The country will get a new Vice President by August

In line with the requirements and guidelines arising after the unexpected resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, the country is expected to get a new Vice President by the last week of August. According to Article 68(2) of the Constitution, there is no fixed time limit for holding the election of the Vice President in case of resignation. As per the provision, the elections should be held as early as possible.

Notification may be issued within three days

According to Election Commission sources, preparations began immediately after the Home Ministry formally informed the Commission about the resignation. A formal notification indicating the need for elections is likely to be issued within the next two to three days. According to the Presidential and Vice Presidential Elections Act, 1952, after the notification is issued, the Election Commission has to complete the entire process, including nomination, scrutiny, withdrawal of nominations, polling and counting, within a maximum of 32 days. Accordingly, the election and swearing-in of the next Vice President of India is expected to be held by the end of August 2025. Nomination papers should be submitted within 14 days of the notification.
