New Delhi: Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has urged the Election Commission (EC) to conclude its inquiry into the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leadership dispute, arguing that the rival faction has already been given sufficient time to present its case.

Mamata Opposes Further Extensions

In a letter addressed to Election Commission Secretary Ashwani Kumar Mohal, Banerjee requested the poll panel not to grant any additional extensions to the rival camp led by Leader of the Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee. She said the matter has significant political implications for West Bengal and should be decided without further delay.

According to the letter, the rival faction was initially asked to submit its response by July 6. The deadline was later extended twice, first to July 10 and then to July 25. Mamata Banerjee claimed her camp has not been informed of any reply being filed even after the extended deadline.

Questions Over Delay

Banerjee argued that the repeated extensions suggest the rival camp has been unable to counter the submissions made by her faction. She further alleged that the additional time could be used to create supporting evidence rather than respond to the issues already raised.

She also maintained that both sides should be treated equally during the proceedings and said granting further time would undermine confidence in the inquiry.

EC Decision to Determine 'Real' TMC

The Election Commission is currently examining competing claims over which faction represents the "real" All India Trinamool Congress. The verdict will determine who retains the party's official name, election symbol, organisational control and financial assets.

The dispute began after a split within the party following its defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections. Rival groups have since staked claim to the party's leadership, making the EC's decision crucial for the political future of the Trinamool Congress.
