New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has completed four years at the helm of the party, marking a significant phase in his political journey. Since taking charge in October 2022, the veteran leader has attempted to maintain organisational stability, manage internal rivalries and keep the Congress’s opposition campaign against the Narendra Modi-led NDA government on track.

Kharge’s Leadership and Congress’s Electoral Performance

With decades of legislative experience, Kharge has focused on building consensus within the party. Congress secured important Assembly victories in Karnataka in 2023 and Telangana in the same year. The party also improved its performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, winning 99 seats and emerging as a stronger opposition force in Parliament.

Balancing the Gandhi Family and Internal Factions

One of the defining aspects of Kharge’s presidency has been his working relationship with the Gandhi family. Rather than creating a confrontation over authority, he has sought to preserve party unity while contributing his own political experience to key decisions.

His consensus-building approach has also been important in addressing leadership disputes and factional differences across state units. Kharge defeated Shashi Tharoor in the 2022 Congress presidential election, securing a decisive mandate from party delegates.

Social Justice and Opposition Politics

Kharge has consistently emphasised secularism, social justice and the need to challenge the BJP and RSS politically. His support for issues such as caste census and greater representation has aligned with the Congress’s broader social justice agenda.

Can Kharge Continue Until 2029?

As he enters his fifth year, questions remain about internal cohesion and the level of support he receives from party colleagues. His ability to manage competing ambitions while strengthening the organisation will be crucial ahead of the next Lok Sabha election, scheduled for 2029.

Kharge’s long-term legacy will ultimately depend on whether the Congress can convert its parliamentary gains into sustained electoral success.
