New Delhi: Madhur Madananandeshwar Vinayak Temple, which is located on the banks of Madhuvahini river near Kasargod in Kerala, is about 1200 years old and is known as Siddhivinayak of the South. This temple is the center of faith of the people of both Kerala and Karnataka states. It is mentioned in Skanda Purana, Brahmanda Purana and Madhya Vijay. 108 expressions of Ganapati are carved on wood around the temple, which show its historical and religious importance.

The temple has Madhuvahini river on one side and a pond on the other side, in which only priests can enter. Recently, a grand entrance of the temple has been built with the help of about one crore rupees, which is lit up with lights. In the last 15 years, the temple has been renovated by spending a total of Rs 20 crore from the donations of devotees.

Meda Sankramana

Meda Sankramana or Madhur festival is celebrated here from the first to the fifth day of the month of Medam of the Malayalam calendar, which lasts for two days in April. After this, Shivaratri and Ganeshotsav are big celebrations. There is a special pomp in the temple during Ganeshotsav. The puja starts at 8 am, but devotees stand at the door of the sanctum sanctorum from 5 am for darshan. After Ganesh Chaturthi, devotees are allowed to enter the sanctum sanctorum only for ten days. Ganapati Homa takes place at 8:15 am, which devotees come to see in large numbers. Prasad distribution in the temple takes place at 1 pm, in which 500 to 1000 people participate daily.

Siddhivinayak

The specialty of the temple is that the idol of Madhur Vinayak faces south and his trunk is bent towards the right. He is also known as Siddhivinayak or Valmuri Ganapati. In this temple, the Lord is not anointed, only worship is done.

A scratch of a sword can also be seen on the black stone wall behind the idol of Lord Ganapati in the sanctum sanctorum. It is said that when Tipu Sultan, the king of Mysore, came to attack Kasargod, he changed his mind after drinking the water of the Madhuvahini river near the temple. He left a mark on the wall with his sword.

This temple is extremely important for the people of both the states due to its unique traditions and deep faith.
