New Delhi: The deadline set by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has ended, bringing the organisation’s proposed “Jantar Mantar 2.0” protest warning back into focus.
The party had issued a 48-hour ultimatum, asking Gyanesh Kumar to step down over its concerns related to the electoral process and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. CJP has warned that it could launch nationwide protests if its demands are not addressed.
The organisation has raised three major demands linked to the Election Commission and electoral reforms.
These include the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, a pause on the SIR process and changes in the existing framework related to the appointment of Election Commissioners.
CJP has alleged that the voter list revision process has raised concerns among citizens. However, the Election Commission has maintained that electoral roll revisions are carried out through established procedures.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke had earlier warned that failure to meet the demands would lead to a larger protest movement.
He said, “If Gyanesh Kumar does not resign within 48 hours, we will start a nationwide protest, before coming for a protest in Delhi.”
He also stated, “Jantar Mantar 2.0 will definitely happen” if the demand for resignation is not accepted.
The reference to “Jantar Mantar 2.0” has drawn attention as the group signals plans for a fresh public demonstration.
The controversy is linked to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, a process aimed at updating voter lists.
CJP has raised objections over the exercise and claimed that it could impact voters. The Election Commission has rejected allegations of irregularities and maintained that voter verification and revision exercises follow legal procedures.
The issue has led to renewed discussions around electoral processes, voter lists and the functioning of election authorities.
With the deadline now over, attention has shifted towards CJP’s next steps and whether the organisation moves ahead with its planned protests.
