New Delhi: Heavy rainfall swept across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Tuesday afternoon, bringing respite from high humidity as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red and orange alerts for thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds in parts of the region.
According to the IMD's district-level nowcast, a red alert has been issued for parts of North Delhi, where moderate rainfall is expected at several places and isolated areas could receive heavy rain. The weather department has also warned of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 70 kmph.
The rest of Delhi remains under an orange alert, with forecasts of moderate rainfall, thunderstorms and winds of 50-60 kmph.
The showers followed an unusually humid morning, when Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 30°C, the highest minimum temperature since July 2, 2024. At 8:30 am, the "feels like" temperature reached 44.7°C due to high humidity levels.
The IMD has forecast generally cloudy skies and moderate rainfall, with the maximum temperature likely to remain around 36°C.
The weather department has predicted light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds across Delhi-NCR over the next five days, covering Delhi and neighbouring areas including Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad.
A yellow alert remains in place for July 7 to July 9, with intermittent spells of rain and thunderstorms expected during the afternoon and night. The warning level has been lowered to green for July 10 and July 11, although light rain and thunderstorms are still likely.
The IMD has advised residents to avoid open areas during thunderstorms and remain cautious of lightning and strong winds. Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon is expected to advance over the remaining parts of the country within the next two to three days.
