Srinagar: Senior BJP leader Raja Waqar today questioned Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over the reported 6.83 per cent hike in power tariff. Waqar told Dynamite News that the tariff increase would add to the financial difficulties of common people and urged the government to reconsider the move in view of the hardships faced by consumers.

Raja Waqar said the government should consider the condition of poor families before increasing electricity charges, as many people are already facing difficulties in clearing their pending dues.

“An ordinary poor person cannot bear the burden of electricity dues. Many people are already struggling to pay their electricity bills. Then why is the government thinking of increasing the tariff further?” he questioned.

BJP leader targets National Conference over free power promise

The BJP leader also criticised the National Conference government, alleging that voters had supported the party with the expectation of receiving 200 units of free electricity, but the promise has not been fulfilled.

He said the government was disappointing its own voters by increasing tariffs instead of providing relief.

“The people of Jammu and Kashmir voted for the National Conference with the hope that they would get some concession, but the situation is completely different now. People are asking where is the relief?” Raja Waqar said.

Raja Waqar reacts to Omar Abdullah’s meter remarks

Raja Waqar also responded to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s recent remarks about people installing electricity meters at their homes, saying that while the Chief Minister may be able to afford such facilities, millions of poor families in Jammu and Kashmir cannot bear the impact of rising electricity costs.

He said the economic condition of many families in the region is already under stress and the government should avoid taking decisions that increase their financial burden.

Calls for reconsideration of tariff hike

The BJP leader urged the Jammu and Kashmir government to reconsider the tariff increase and take steps to reduce the difficulties faced by common people.

He said the government should focus on providing relief to consumers rather than adding to their financial challenges.
