Hills brace for fresh snowfall; Delhi-NCR likely to receive weekend showers

Weather conditions are set to change across north-west and central India due to multiple active western disturbances. The India Meteorological Department has forecast rain, snowfall and strong winds till February 3. Hill states may witness fresh snowfall, while Delhi-NCR is likely to see rain over the weekend.

New Delhi: The weather in northwest India is set to change once again. Due to active western disturbances, warnings have been issued for rain in several states and snowfall in hilly areas until February 3rd. According to the Meteorological Department, strong winds will blow during this period, which could further intensify the cold. Clouds are also expected to rain in Delhi-NCR over the weekend.

Western Disturbances to Increase Activity

The Meteorological Department reported that a western disturbance has become active in the form of a cyclonic circulation over northeastern Iran. The second western disturbance will begin on the night of February 2nd, and the third on February 5th. Due to these influences, rain and snowfall are expected in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad from January 31st to February 2nd.

Rain and hailstorms likely in these states

Light to moderate rain is expected in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh on February 1st. Meanwhile, Uttarakhand is expected to experience thunderstorms and hailstorms from February 1st to 3rd, western Uttar Pradesh from February 1st to 2nd, and Rajasthan from January 31st to February 1st. A warning has also been issued for strong winds with speeds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour during this period.

Yellow Alert in Delhi-NCR

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for rain and strong winds in Delhi-NCR. Light to moderate rain is expected for three days over the weekend. The sky has been overcast for the past two days, and rain is expected soon.

Chillai Kalan ends in Kashmir

The 40-day period of severe cold in the Kashmir Valley, 'Chillai Kalan', has ended. Night temperatures have risen slightly. The minimum temperature in Srinagar has reached above the freezing point. However, a western disturbance is expected to bring rain and snowfall again on Sunday. Avalanche warnings have also been issued for high-altitude areas.

Challenging Situation in Himachal

Rain and snowfall in Himachal Pradesh have closed 482 roads, affecting hundreds of power transformers and drinking water projects. An avalanche warning has been issued for Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, and Pangi regions.

Impact of Fog and Stormy Winds

Dense fog has disrupted several flights at Amritsar Airport. Meanwhile, stormy winds with speeds of 45 to 65 kmph have been predicted in the southeast Arabian Sea and near the Kerala coast. The Meteorological Department has advised people to remain vigilant.
