Hotter than ever? Heatwave to intensify across North India, Delhi to touch 45°C

The IMD has warned of intensifying heatwave conditions across North India, with Delhi’s temperature likely to touch 45°C next week, while several states may also witness thunderstorms and gusty winds.

New Delhi: Large parts of North and Central India are expected to witness severe heatwave conditions over the coming days as temperatures continue to rise sharply, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The weather department has issued warnings for several states, including Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab, where scorching conditions are likely to persist till May 22.

The IMD said hot and humid weather is expected to dominate many regions, with daytime temperatures climbing steadily due to dry weather and strong solar heating.

Delhi Likely To Touch 45°C

The national capital is expected to experience a further rise in temperature over the next few days. According to the IMD forecast, Delhi may record temperatures close to 45 degrees Celsius next week.

For Sunday, the city is likely to witness partly cloudy skies along with the possibility of thundercloud development during the afternoon and evening hours. Gusty surface winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph may also occur during the day.

Despite the brief possibility of cloud activity, weather experts expect clear skies and intense heat to dominate the coming week, increasing discomfort levels across the NCR region.

Several States Under Heatwave Alert

The IMD has forecast heatwave conditions over Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh and parts of the Konkan and Goa region.

The Western Himalayan region is also likely to see a rise in temperatures by 3 to 4 degrees Celsius over the next few days. Most parts of northwest India are expected to remain under severe summer stress as dry conditions continue.

Meteorologists said prolonged exposure to extreme heat may increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke, particularly during afternoon hours.

Rain And Thunderstorm Activity In Some Regions

Even as heatwave conditions intensify across several states, parts of northeast and southern India are likely to receive rainfall and thunderstorms.

The IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall accompanied by lightning and gusty winds in states including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

Southern states such as Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are also likely to witness scattered rainfall and thunderstorm activity over the next few days.
