Patna: The Ministry of Indian Railways approved the Kiul-Jhajna 3rd railway line project of 54-kilometer on Tuesday. According to the Press Information of Bureau(PIB) total ₹962 crore will be spent on this project. This initiative is considered a significant step toward enhancing railway capacity on the Howrah-Delhi High Traffic Density Corridor. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the Kiul-Jhajha third line project will lead to a substantial increase in operational capacity on this extremely busy railway section.
This will improve train punctuality and enable smoother operations for both passenger and freight trains. According to the Ministry of Railways press release the existing double-line section between Kiul and Jhajha is currently operating under pressure exceeding its designed capacity.
Given the likelihood of further growth in demand for passenger and freight transport in the coming years, the need for an additional line had become increasingly apparent. The construction of the proposed 54-kilometer third line will alleviate congestion on the railway section, facilitating faster and more organized train movements.
This will further strengthen rail connectivity between Patna and Kolkata, while also benefiting the industrial and logistics hubs of Eastern and Northern India.
This railway section plays a pivotal role in connecting the ports of Kolkata and Haldia with Raxaul and Nepal. Furthermore, this route bears a significant volume of freight traffic associated with the Barauni Thermal Power Project, the Jawahar STPP, and the Birgunj ICD.
Indian Railways has designated this section as part of its High Traffic Density Network Corridor. According to PIB The Ministry of Railways anticipates that upon the completion of this project, passenger amenities will improve.
Freight transportation will become more efficient, and logistics connectivity between the key economic hubs of Eastern and Northern India will receive a significant boost.
