New Delhi: The political atmosphere has heated up ahead of the crucial meeting of the opposition alliance, the INDIA bloc, scheduled for Monday. Voices of dissent are now openly emerging within the alliance, which was once considered the united opposition's greatest strength against the BJP. Following the DMK's decision to stay away from the meeting, the displeasure expressed by the CPM and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has created a fresh challenge for the Congress.
M.A. Baby, General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPM, has written to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, registering serious objections. The letter expresses displeasure over the political campaign being run by the Congress against Left parties in Kerala and the issues raised regarding the state's Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan.
The CPM believes that while the INDIA alliance speaks of a united fight against the BJP, alliance partners are engaging in aggressive politics against each other in certain states. The party has sought clarity regarding this contradiction. However, despite these differences, the CPM has not distanced itself from the alliance; it has nominated Rajya Sabha MP Dr. John Brittas to attend the meeting. This indicates that the CPM wishes to keep the channels of dialogue and communication open for now.
The DMK's stance is being viewed as the biggest setback for the INDIA bloc. The party has already announced its decision to boycott the meeting. Political analysts believe that recent political developments have strained relations between the DMK and the Congress. The DMK's decision is particularly significant as it is one of the alliance's key forces in South India. At a time when the opposition aims to project a message of unity at the national level, a major ally staying away from the meeting raises several questions. JMM Also Displeased Over Rajya Sabha Seat
Tensions appear to be rising between the Congress and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) regarding the Rajya Sabha elections in Jharkhand. According to sources, the JMM leadership is unhappy with the Congress's decision regarding the selection of a candidate. Reports suggest the party has conveyed its displeasure to the top leadership and has kept the option open to field a separate candidate if necessary.
The recurring differences have sparked a debate regarding the strength of opposition unity. Several constituent parties of the alliance believe that strengthening mutual trust and coordination is essential to effectively counter the BJP at the national level. Political analysts observe that while competition among allies in individual states is natural, if this rivalry begins to impact the national stage, the alliance's strategy could be weakened.
Meanwhile, the BJP has launched a scathing attack on the ongoing infighting within the INDIA bloc. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla stated that the opposition alliance lacks both clear leadership and a shared vision. According to him, the disputes constantly emerging within the alliance reveal a lack of trust among the parties. He claimed that the alliance is merely the result of political compulsion and that the partner parties do not appear to be in agreement with one another.
It is worth noting that a crucial meeting of the INDIA alliance is scheduled for June 8 in New Delhi, with representatives from approximately 17 opposition parties expected to attend. Major parties such as the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, and Aam Aadmi Party are likely to participate. However, the DMK—an alliance partner—has decided to stay away from this meeting. Reports indicate that the party chose to boycott the meeting due to recent political differences between the Congress and the DMK, as well as developments concerning Tamil Nadu.
