India, China hold border talks in Beijing (Img: Internet)
New Delhi: India and China have held discussions over the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and concluded that peace along the border is crucial for bettering their relations.
The discussions were held amid the 35th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on India-China border affairs in Beijing on May 27.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that the talks were “constructive and forward-looking”. Both sides reviewed the border situations and expressed satisfaction over the ongoing efforts to ensure peace and stability along the LAC.
India was represented by its Joint Secretary (East Asia) Sujit Ghosh, while China was led by Hou Yanqi, the Director General of the Boundary and Oceanic Affairs Department of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Both countries expressed to engage in diplomacy and military discussions through existing mechanisms to prevent any tension along the border. “Both sides expressed satisfaction at the positive developments achieved in maintaining peace and tranquility in the border areas, which has facilitated progress towards the gradual normalization of bilateral relations,” the ministry said in a release.
India and China’s officials also exchanged views over matters relating to border management, boundary-related questions, mechanism building, and cooperation in border regions.
The Indian side emphasized the need for an early meeting of the Expert Level Mechanism on trans-border rivers as an important aspect since there are many rivers flowing into India from Tibet.

The current discussions come as India and China seek to stabilize their strained ties amid the military standoff in eastern Ladakh that started in 2020 due to the Galwan Valley clash.
Since then, both India and China have held multiple rounds of talks with regards to military disengagement and easing of tensions in friction areas. India and China also agreed to make preparations for the next round of Special Representative which are anticipated to be held in China later this year.
During his visit Ghosh also met Liu Jinsong, the Director General of the Department of Asian Affairs, Chinese Foreign Ministry and called on Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Hong Lei.
