Cross-border trade through Shipki La in Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur district resumed after a six-year hiatus, restoring another centuries-old Himalayan trading corridor linking India with Tibet. Himachal Pradesh Revenue and Horticulture Minister Jagat Singh Negi flagged off the first batch of 16 traders, who began their journey towards Tibet after receiving traditional khataks (ceremonial scarves). The trade will continue under the traditional barter system, with traders permitted to remain in the Tibetan region for up to 72 hours before returning.
