New Delhi: India’s naval power received a significant boost with the induction of two advanced warships-INS Taragiri and INS Aridhaman-into the Indian Navy. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh formally dedicated both vessels to the nation during a ceremonial event in Visakhapatnam.

The ceremony was attended by top military leadership, including Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi and Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan.

These inductions underline India’s growing maritime capabilities amid evolving regional security dynamics, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.

INS Taragiri: A Stealth Powerhouse on the Surface

INS Taragiri is the fourth stealth frigate under the Indian Navy’s Project 17A, and a shining example of indigenous defence manufacturing under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

Weighing around 6,670 tons, the warship is equipped with cutting-edge stealth technology, enabling it to evade modern radar detection and operate effectively in hostile environments.

Key Features:

  • Stealth design for reduced radar visibility
  • Armed with BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles
  • Advanced MF-STAR radar system for surveillance and tracking
  • MRSAM air defence system for aerial threat interception
  • Close-in weapon systems (30mm and 12.7mm guns)
  • Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) capabilities with rockets and torpedoes

With its high speed, advanced sensors, and lethal weaponry, INS Taragiri significantly enhances India’s surface combat capabilities, especially along the strategically vital eastern seaboard.

INS Aridhaman: India’s Silent Nuclear Deterrent

INS Aridhaman is a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), forming a critical part of India’s nuclear triad. Built under the Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) programme in Visakhapatnam, it represents a major leap in India’s undersea warfare capabilities.

Measuring about 125 meters in length and displacing approximately 7,000 tons, the submarine is designed for long-duration stealth operations deep underwater.

Key Features:
Nuclear-powered propulsion for extended underwater endurance
8 vertical launch tubes capable of carrying:
Long-range K-4 ballistic missiles, or
Multiple K-15 missiles
Ability to remain hidden in ocean depths for strategic deterrence
Capable of launching a second-strike nuclear response

INS Aridhaman strengthens India’s credible minimum deterrence posture by ensuring survivable and reliable nuclear strike capability.

Strategic Significance

The induction of these two advanced platforms comes at a time when the geopolitical importance of the Indo-Pacific region is rapidly increasing. With growing maritime challenges and strategic competition, these warships will play a crucial role in safeguarding India’s interests and enhancing naval dominance.

Together, INS Taragiri and INS Aridhaman symbolize India’s technological progress, defence self-reliance, and commitment to securing its maritime frontiers.
