New Delhi: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday took a shocking decision to resigned from his post.

Dhankhar, under Article 67(a), has submitted his resignation to President Draupadi Murmu. He tendered his resignation two years before the end of tenure.

What is Article 67(a)?
Article 67(a) of the Indian constitution allows the Vice President to resign voluntarily before the end of his five-year term by submitting a written resignation to the President.

The article in question states that “a Vice-President may, by writing under his hand addressed to the President, resign his office.”

Jagdeep Dhankhar had assumed the role of the Vice President in August 2022. As per the official term of five years, his tenure would have come to end in 2027.

The ruling BJP-led NDA enjoys a majority among voters, including members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, so it is surprised by Dhankhar's decision to resign. Possible names are likely to be considered in the coming days.

Dhankhar was the Governor of Bengal before assuming the post of Vice President, so it is being speculated that one of the governors or an experienced organizational leader or one of the Union ministers can be chosen for the post of Vice President.

'The party will choose a person who is not controversial'
The BJP has a large group of leaders to choose for this post. Before Dhankhar, former BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu was the Vice President. When the party chose him for the key constitutional post in 2017, he was in the cabinet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He suggested that an experienced person of the party could be the preferred choice. JDU MP and Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh is also being seen as a possible candidate, as he has been in the post since 2020 and enjoys the confidence of the government.

During Dhankhar's three-year tenure, he often clashed with opposition parties in the Rajya Sabha, but his sharp comments on often controversial issues disappointed the government many times.
