Jaipur: A devastating fire broke out late Sunday night in the trauma ICU of Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur, Rajasthan, resulting in the deaths of seven critically ill patients. At the time of the fire, 24 patients were admitted in the ICU and semi-ICU combined.
While seven succumbed to the smoke and flames, several others were critically injured and rushed to other wards for treatment. The blaze, suspected to have originated from a short circuit in the ICU’s storage area, spread rapidly, engulfing the ward and releasing toxic smoke that further complicated rescue efforts.

Families of the victims have raised serious allegations against hospital staff, accusing them of negligence. Relatives claimed that despite noticing smoke and alerting hospital personnel, their warnings were ignored.
Seven succumbed to the smoke and flames
Eyewitnesses stated that when the fire intensified, several staff members allegedly fled the scene, leaving patients and their families to fend for themselves. One attendant said, “We noticed smoke and immediately informed the staff, but they did not pay any heed. When the fire broke out, they were the first to run. Now, we cannot get any information about our patients.”
The tragedy has sparked outrage across the state, prompting swift action from the government. Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, along with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Jogaram Patel and Minister of State for Home Jawahar Singh Bedham, visited the trauma centre to assess the situation and offer support to the victims’ families.
