J&K: After intense firefights, uneasy calm returns to borders

Srinagar: There were no reported incidents of firing overnight between the Indian and Pakistani militaries along the Line of Control and the International Border.

"The night remained largely peaceful across Jammu and Kashmir and other areas along the International border," the Indian Army said on Monday.

First Calm Night

Borders in Jammu and Kashmir witnessed first calm night in recent days, Army said on Monday.

They said no incident of cross border shelling was reported during the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.

Army Statement

"The night remained largely peaceful across Jammu & Kashmir and other areas along the International Border. No incidents have been reported, marking the first calm night in recent days, " an Army statement on Monday said.

No Ceasefire Violations

Officials confirmed that there were no reports of ceasefire violations along the 350-kilometre-long LoC in the Kashmir region, which passes through the districts of Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora.

In Uri, residents have begun returning to their homes, and shops in the main town.

“After four days, the market has opened up here. While peace has returned, people are still scared. Hopefully, this calm continues,” said Irshad Ahmed, a resident of Uri who had migrated to Baramulla town three days ago due to the shelling.

He said several houses were damaged and life has changed during the past fortnight of violence.

Another resident, Manzoor Ahmed from Gingal, said children suffered the worst psychological trauma during the hostilities.

Earlier Shelling

Jammu and Kashmir witnessed a tense spell of cross-border shelling over the past fortnight.

At least 21 civilians, including five children, lost their lives during the shelling in past week. The border clashes, which erupted after the Pahalgam terror attack, also claimed the lives of five personnel.

The situation escalated on May 7 following "Operation Sindoor" — which targeted terrorist bases in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir The strikes were launched in response to the deadly attack in Pahalgam that left 26 civilians dead.

After days of shelling and exchanges of fire, India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire from Saturday evening providing a breather to residents in the border areas who had been caught in the crossfire.
